The Issue
The issue
Some of the greatest barriers to girls’ education in Tanzania stem from the impact of discriminatory social norms. Child marriage, gender-based violence and policies keeping pregnant girls from attending school are some of the issues keeping many young women from achieveing their potential
Rose’s approach
Rose is the Programme Officer for Gender and Child Protection at HakiElimu, a civil society organisation advocating for equitable access to quality, basic education in Tanzania. The organisation leads community level work and uses research, policy and budget analysis to make informed recommendations to leaders.
With the grant from Malala Fund, Rose and the HakiElimu team will train community members to gather evidence on girls’ education. This will support calls for policy change and help challenge the social norms keeping girls from school. They are fighting for policies that ensure schools offer a girl-friendly curriculum, install child protection policies and allow both pregnant and married girls to continue learning. Efforts will target leaders across the 10 regions in the country with the lowest reported learning outcomes for girls.
