The Issue
The issue
In Tanzania, there is progress on keeping teen mothers in school. The government has developed a circular and shared guidelines on girls returning to school. Yet, many girls still face challenges to learn. Some young mothers are unable to return to school after giving birth. The reasons why vary — authority figures misunderstand national guidelines, lack of psycho-social support for young mothers and lack of enforcement mechanisms to protect girls. Attitudes around this issue also remain divisive amongst various communities.
Nasra’s approach
Policy Reform, Community AdvocacyNasra is the Policy and Advocacy Officer at Tanzania Education Network/Mtandao wa Elimu Tanzania (TEN/MeT). The entity is a network of 140 active education sector NGOs from across Tanzania advocating for equitable access to quality education. In her role, Nasra works with education stakeholders to advocate for teen mothers' right to re-enter formal education.
With their Malala Fund grant, Nasra and the team at TEN/MeT will advocate for gender responsive budgeting and work to improve perception of girls’ education, especially for pregnant girls and young mothers. To do this they will facilitate community-led awareness campaigns and advocate for policies that increase the minimum marriage age and grant young mothers the right to re-enter formal education. TEN/MeT will also educate students about gender inequality and sexual and reproductive health.
