Dehab Mustefa Mohammed

National Secretary General, Young Women's Christian Association in Ethiopia (YWCA) Champion since 2022
Raising awareness of gender-based violence and its effects on girls’ education

The Issue

In Ethiopia, while school enrolment has increased overall in recent years, girls still face lower levels of enrolment and completion at the secondary level. Girls in secondary education often report high rates of school-related gender based violence as the main cause of absenteeism.

Dehab’s approach

Dehab is the National Secretary General at the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), an organisation that develops women's leadership in order to help find local solutions to the global inequalities women face. She began her journey there as an intern in the YWCA’s Ethiopia office and now leads the team’s advocacy, education campaigns and government relations initiatives.

With their Malala Fund grant, Dehab and the YWCA team will work to promote safer schools and gender sensitive education by analysing the prevalence of school-related gender based violence and its impact at 15 schools in the regional states, Amhara and Oromia. The data they collect will help them develop community training tools and inform their advocacy work. They will also provide advocacy training for girls and develop stakeholder coalitions to push for improved local policies around girls’ education and safeguarding students at school.
